Working as a supply educator is a little different from having one classroom or one centre you report to every day. Your schedule can change, the team can change, and the children can change — and that’s also what makes the role so unique.

So, what does a successful day as a MeLor supply educator actually look like?

Start with your availability.
Keep your availability up to date and only mark yourself available when you are genuinely ready to work. Many of our requests come in early in the morning or with short notice, so being prepared to respond can make a big difference.

Prepare the night before.
Have your work clothes ready, your bag packed and anything you need for the day organized. If you’ve accepted a shift, check the location and plan your commute ahead of time. A little preparation makes for a much smoother morning.

Arrive ready to jump in.
Every childcare centre has its own routines, expectations and way of doing things. Introduce yourself, ask where you’re needed and be open to direction. You aren’t expected to know everything the second you walk through the door — but initiative goes a long way.

Be present with the children.
Get involved. Sit on the floor. Join the activity. Help with transitions. Engage in conversations. Learn names when you can. Centres notice educators who are genuinely present rather than simply waiting to be told what to do.

Remember that the little things matter.
Helping tidy a room, supporting another educator during a busy transition, noticing that something needs to be done and stepping in — these are often the things that make a centre ask for an educator again.

Communication is everything.
Things happen. Transit gets delayed, plans change and questions come up. Communicate with the MeLor team as soon as possible rather than waiting. Reliable communication helps us support you and the centre.

Leave a great impression.
One of the best compliments we can receive is when a centre calls and says, “Can you send that educator back?” Your professionalism represents you, but it also represents the entire MeLor team.
